Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) in Windermere, FL

At Feel Happy Counseling and Coaching in Windermere, FL, we offer Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) — one of the most evidence-based, effective treatments for trauma, PTSD and the negative beliefs that can develop after traumatic experiences. Our therapists use CPT to help clients reclaim their lives from the shadow of trauma.

What Is Cognitive Processing Therapy?

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy originally developed for survivors of sexual assault and now widely used for PTSD from any traumatic event. CPT focuses on identifying and changing “stuck points” — unhelpful beliefs that developed as a result of trauma, such as “It was my fault,” “I can never trust anyone,” or “The world is completely unsafe.” By examining and reprocessing these beliefs, CPT helps restore a more balanced, adaptive worldview.

How CPT Works

CPT typically involves 12 weekly sessions of 60 minutes each. The process includes:

  • Psychoeducation: Understanding how trauma affects thoughts and feelings
  • Identifying stuck points: Pinpointing specific negative beliefs formed by the trauma
  • Challenging stuck points: Using structured worksheets to examine evidence for and against these beliefs
  • Replacing stuck points: Developing more balanced, accurate beliefs about yourself, others and the world
  • Addressing five key areas: Safety, trust, power/control, esteem and intimacy

Who Is CPT For?

CPT is effective for survivors of: sexual assault or abuse, military combat, childhood trauma, natural disasters, accidents, domestic violence and other traumatic events. It is also effective for complex trauma (multiple or prolonged traumatic experiences). CPT is recommended by the VA, APA and other leading mental health bodies as a first-line treatment for PTSD.
