Somatic Experience
Somatic Experience Therapy in Windermere, FL
At Feel Happy Counseling and Coaching in Windermere, FL, we offer Somatic Experiencing (SE) — a body-centered approach to healing trauma and stress that goes beyond talk therapy to address what trauma does to the nervous system. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing is one of the most effective trauma treatments available.
What Is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between the mind and body to promote healing from trauma and stress-related disorders. It is based on the understanding that traumatic experiences can become “stuck” in the body — as incomplete defensive responses (fight, flight, freeze) that never fully resolved. These stuck responses continue to generate anxiety, hypervigilance, depression and physical symptoms long after the original event.
How Somatic Experiencing Works
SE works by helping clients become more aware of body sensations — tracking the physical experience of emotions, memories and nervous system states. Through a process of titrated (gradual, gentle) attention to these sensations, the therapist guides the client in completing the incomplete defensive responses and discharging the trapped energy of trauma. The result is a nervous system that can return to regulation — a state of calm, resilience and aliveness.
What Somatic Experience Treats
- PTSD and complex trauma
- Chronic anxiety and panic
- Depression with physical symptoms
- Chronic pain and somatic symptoms with psychological origins
- Attachment and developmental trauma

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Somatic Experiencing different from regular therapy?
A: Yes. While standard talk therapy focuses on thoughts and narrative, SE focuses on physical sensations and nervous system regulation. It often helps people who haven’t responded well to purely cognitive approaches.
Q: Do I have to touch or be touched during Somatic Experiencing?
A: No. SE at Feel Happy Counseling is entirely verbal — your therapist will guide you in paying attention to sensations, but there is no physical contact.
Q: Is Somatic Experiencing available via telehealth?
A: Yes. SE adapts well to online sessions and is available for Florida residents.
Q: How long does Somatic Experiencing take?
A: It depends on the complexity of the trauma. Many clients notice significant nervous system changes within 10–20 sessions. Developmental trauma may require longer-term work.
Q: How is this different from,?
A: Both are body-aware trauma therapies.,uses bilateral stimulation and follows a structured protocol focusing on memory processing. SE is more improvisational, tracking body sensations moment-to-moment. Both are effective; your therapist can discuss which is the better fit.
