Grief and Loss
Grief and Loss Counseling in Windermere, FL
Grief is one of the most universal — and most isolating — human experiences. At Feel Happy Counseling and Coaching in Windermere, FL, we provide compassionate, individualized support to help you process loss and find a path forward without dismissing or rushing your grief.
What Is Grief?
Grief is the emotional and physical response to any significant loss — not only the death of a loved one, but also the end of a relationship, loss of a job, pregnancy loss, loss of a pet, financial loss, or loss of a sense of safety after trauma. Research shows that 1 in 5 children will experience the death of someone close before the age of 18, and millions of adults face losses of all kinds every year.
Symptoms of Grief
- Shock, disbelief, or a sense of unreality
- Profound sadness and crying
- Guilt (“I could have done more”) or anger (at the deceased, at God, at yourself)
- Fear about the future and your ability to cope
- Numbness and emotional detachment
- Physical symptoms: fatigue, nausea, changes in appetite or sleep
- Social withdrawal and loss of interest in activities
How Feel Happy Counseling Approaches Grief
We know that grief does not follow a neat linear process of “stages.” Everyone experiences loss differently based on their personality, culture, beliefs, relationship with the person or thing lost, and many other factors. Our role is not to move you through grief faster — it is to walk alongside you, provide a safe space for all the emotions, and help you integrate the loss into a life that still has meaning and joy.
Our approaches include narrative therapy, somatic approaches to grief held in the body, CBT for complicated grief, mindfulness, and supportive counseling. We honor your unique grief process and work at your pace.
What to Expect in Sessions
Grief sessions provide a dedicated, judgment-free space to tell your story — about the person, relationship, or thing you’ve lost; about your regrets and memories; about the future you imagined that won’t happen now. Your therapist will help you process emotions, address guilt and anger, manage the physical symptoms of grief, and gradually rebuild meaning and engagement in life.
When to Seek Help for Grief
Normal grief typically lessens gradually over time, though it never fully disappears. Seek help if grief is significantly interfering with daily functioning after several months; if you’re experiencing complicated grief (intense yearning, bitterness, or difficulty accepting the loss that doesn’t lessen with time); if you’re using alcohol or substances to cope; or if you’re having thoughts of self-harm. You should also simply seek support if you want it — there is no threshold you need to meet to deserve help.
Recovery and Hope
Grief does not end — but it does transform. Most people find that with support, they are able to carry their loss in a way that honors who or what they loved while still living fully. The goal of grief therapy is not to “get over” loss but to integrate it — to find a way to hold it alongside joy, connection, and purpose. Healing is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone.
Frequently Asked Questions About Grief Counseling
Q: How soon after a loss should I start therapy?
A: There’s no “right” time. Some people benefit from immediate support; others find therapy helpful months or years later when grief resurfaces or becomes complicated. You can start whenever you feel ready.
Q: What is complicated grief?
A: Complicated grief (also called prolonged grief disorder) involves intense, persistent grief that doesn’t improve over time and significantly impairs functioning. It’s more common after sudden losses, suicide, or when the relationship was complicated. It responds well to specialized therapy.
Q: Can children receive grief counseling at your practice?
A: Yes. Nuria Clarke-Farghason works with children and teens ages 10–18 who are experiencing grief and loss.
Q: Is it normal to feel angry when grieving?
A: Yes, absolutely. Anger is a natural and healthy part of grief. You may feel angry at the person who died, at the circumstances, at God, or at yourself. Therapy provides a safe space to express and process all of it.
Q: Do you offer virtual grief counseling?
A: Yes. We offer telehealth sessions for Florida residents, which can be especially helpful on harder days when leaving home feels difficult.
